A brief description of the event

The World Mountain Medicine Congress 2027 will be held within the 2^nd World Mountain Summit.

The World Mountain Summit has officially been included in the plan of the Administration of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Sadyr Dschaparow. During this event, challenges related to climate change, ecosystem degradation, and sustainable development of mountain territories, and their impact on the health and safety of individuals living in high altitude areas will be discussed with international organizations.

The World Mountain Medicine Congress 2027 will focus on presenting, disseminating and discussing the most recent discoveries in high altitude medicine and physiology. Particular attention will be given to high-altitude adaptation and acclimatization, high altitude illnesses, as well as to the care of highlanders and of lowlanders travelling to mountains. The sessions aim to deepen our understanding of the health consequences of hypoxia and are specifically designed for healthcare professionals.

About

History

The Swiss-Kyrgyz High Altitude Medicine and Research Symposium series, held in 2016, 2021 and 2024, had been very successful in bringing together high altitude experts, who share their knowledge and improve our understanding of hypoxia and high altitude physiology and medicine. This has provided significant insight into high altitude research, contributing to a better understanding of adaptation to high altitude and altitude-related illnesses.

The previous and current congresses were specifically planned to take place in Kyrgyzstan. This facilitated participation of experts from central Asian countries where large portions of the population reside in high mountain areas and where there is a longstanding experience in high altitude medicine.

Location

Bishkek is the capital and largest city of Kyrgyzstan, located at the northern edge of the Tian Shan mountain range. As a regional administrative and educational center, the city provides essential urban infrastructure, including major transport axes and public institutions. Its proximity to the surrounding alpine regions offers straightforward access to diverse high-altitude environments that are relevant for clinical and physiological research related to mountain and altitude medicine. This geographical setting makes Bishkek a suitable point of entry for observing environmental conditions and health-related challenges associated with living and conducting activities in elevated terrain.
